What is Love?
One hit wonder Haddaway once asked "What is love?" and immediately followed up his question with the statement, "Baby don't hurt me, no more."That is a very pervasive question: what is love exactly?
Hollywood would like us to believe that love is a fleeting feeling that comes on in the heat of the moment and is a valid excuse for "making love" to the woman of your dreams, or at least the "woman of the moment." Love, according to them, is a feeling. A feeling that often comes and goes like the tides in the sea. A feeling that may or may not manifest itself in relationships. Love to them, and unfortunately most people is a feeling. A feeling!
Let me just state right here and now that love is not just a feeling! Our culture has brought us up to believe it is, but love is so much more! Love, for lack of better term, is a verb. Love involves more than a fleeting feeling of infatuation towards a person. Love is much deeper than that.
Love is:
- Selfless. Love wants what is best for the other person, no matter what pain or problems it will cause.
- Patient. It does not become frustrated with the other person no matter how long they take in the bathroom.
- Kind. Love always goes out of it's way to make sure the other person feels needed and wanted. It may be little things like cleaning the dishes, or washing the clothes, but even little things can mean a lot.
- Eternal. Love never dies out. Yes, the "flame" may die out, but that is only the flame of infatuation. Love is constant no matter what is going on in the relationship.
- Beyond our human understanding. No one really understands what goes into love. Yes it is a feeling that comes over you when you see someone that you care about, but it's hard to describe.
And that's all I can come up with at the moment. But as you can see, the love described here is more than the "love" described by our culture. Take time to think about this and let me know if you think any differently.
