"Singles Awareness Day"... and Such

Valentines Day: two words that strike fear into the hearts of those who are single and in a relationship alike. A day that some choose to call "Single Awareness Day." Still others choose to ignore it and go on with their lives as if it is a normal day.
I personally think Valentines Day is a contrived holiday, created by Hallmark to pump as much money as possible into the economy as possible. I don't like Valentines Day for numerous reasons, but the top few are as follows:
1. You shouldn't tell your significant other you love them and buy them gifts one time a year. If you truly loved and cared for them, you would be spontaneous throughout the year. Give little gifts like flowers or jewelry on other days. That way, you don't have to worry about getting your significant other something on Valentines Day.
2. It creates unreasonable expectations. Not only does Valentines Day promote "lovey-dovey" feelings and create the biggest day of infidelity in the course of the year, but it also creates unreasonably high expectations which cause infidelity. And most of the time, the guy is the one who gets screwed over by this. The girl has expectations of a very romantic dinner, complete with a gift that will dazzle her and make her feel special. Unfortunately... what most often happens is the guy gets a simple boquet of roses and makes a home cooked meal. Not exactly a big expectation satisfyer.
3. It makes everyone else who isn't in a relationship very desparate. My friends and I have a name for the day before Valentines Day: Desperation Day. The day where anyone and everyone who doesn't have a date for Valentines Day go out and act like idiots trying to get a date for Valentines. It's stupid.
The real reason that we have Valentines Day is because waaaaaay back when the Romans ruled the Medditerranean Sea and the lands around it, a guy named Valentine disagreed with their law that no one could get married. He went around marrying all those who came to him, disobeying the law. The Romans found out about it and got pissed. They killed Valentine, but his name lived on and he was sainted by the Catholic Church. Therefore, when we're celebrating Valentine's Day, we're actually celebrating the fact that we can get married. It's about love, but not the love that Hallmark sells us.
