First Impressions - Skyrim

Ok... so I just got Skyrim for the PS3 last night and spent a good few hours wandering the world performing various deeds and misdeeds. These are my impressions:

1. Design - The world itself is gorgeous. The amount of detail put into the world is amazing. I love that when I jump into a river, I'm pulled along by the current. I can count the number of leaves on the trees, and when I get close to the branches of a pine, I can almost feel the needles poking my skin. I really enjoy stalking the elk and deer that roam the woods and get a feeling of extreme satisfaction when I take down one in a single blow. It's very easy for me to spend 2-3 hours in the game without even realizing the time has passed.

2. Combat - The combat is pristine and quick. Being able to swing a sword with one hand while casting a fire spell is great. Sneak attacks with a bow feels extremely satisfying, especially because the enemies don't always notice where the attack came from. And the ability to use potions to poison your weapons is just icing on the cake. Nothing is more satisfying then causing 200% damage with a poisoned arrow that also sapps the target's stamina.

3. Character Models - The character models for Skyrim are gorgeous. When compared to the previous installment of the Elder Scrolls, the difference is as different as night and day. The characters have facial expressions, and the voices aren't relegated to three different voice actors.

These are just some of the impressions that I gleaned from my first few hours with Skyrim. I look forward to exploring the vast expanse of the world and delving into my "dragonborn" abilities.

More updates to follow...
