The Avengers: Avenging All Terrible Superhero Movies
So before I start my review of The Avengers, I just want to say, that if anyone has something to say about what I have posted here, feel free to shoot me a comment, or a note, or whatever y'all use. Now with that out of the way, The Avengers.
Wow.
That's the first thing that I thought as soon as the movie ended. And this was before the geek out about the final scene during the credits. I refuse to spoil the ending for all you comic fans out there, and if you aren't a big fan of comic books, well I'm sorry but you can just google what the final scene means.
As for the movie itself, I loved what Joss Whedon did with the Avengers. It was a perfect melding of all the characters into one giant, dysfunctional band. As for character development, it was great having all of the main characters' backstories already defined. We already know how Thor came to Earth, how Iron Man became Iron Man (and what he struggled with), how Captain America became the BA that he is now, and how the Hulk deals with his "anger issues." Keep in mind that Black Widow, Col. Fury, and Hawkeye didn't have their own movies, but both Black Widow and Col. Fury had some of their story explained in Iron Man 2, and Hawkeye was introduced in Thor (look for it, he's there).
What with the huge success of The Avengers (it broke a couple box office records) even smaller characters like the Hulk are becoming popular again. Me, I've always been a fan of the Hulk, and all of the minor characters in the Avengers, like Black Panther, and Spider-Man. Yes, the former one was in one of the previous ititerations of the Avengers, and Spider-Man is currently in the Avengers. But I digress.
Back to the awesomeness that is the Avengers. The quick dialogue between the characters was hilarious and some of the scenes (Loki and the Hulk) were just downright "pee myself" funny. Joss Whedon really outdid himself with this movie. Many would criticize the movie for being too funny, but come on people! Real life isn't funny all the time for y'all? It is for me.
Still others would criticize that Marvel has diverged from the "serious, realistic" superhero genre. But if you take a look at many of the Marvel villians, most, if not all of them, are completely rediculously out of the normal. Electro can shoot electricity out of his body, and travel through electric lines. Sandman is a man who can manipulate his body that is made of sand, and create various forms with it. And the Lizard is a giant lizard-man. Tell me how any of these villians are close to "realistic." Of course with Batman, you have the Joker, Scarecrow, and Two-Face, but what about Poison Ivy, Clayface, and the Man-Bat? Nolan may have created the best Batman movies to date, but there is an entire side of Batman villians yet to be explored.
And back to the review. All in all The Avengers was everything that I had ever wanted in a super hero movie: action, humor, and just all around awesomeness.
If you are any kind of fan of movies, or are just looking for a good time and a fun way to spend some money, check out the Avengers.
